John Norman's very first book that subsequently launched a series of new tales  lasting at least 50 years is Tarnsman of Gor, published by Ballantine Books, 1966.

Its publishers referred to the series as The Chronicles of Counter-Earth, The Saga of Tarl Cabot, Gorean Cycle, Gorean Chronicles, Gorean Saga, and The Counter-Earth Saga. By 2020, John Norman successfully published a total of 35 Gorean Saga titles in print and digital editions covering several languages including English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Czech, Japanese, Korean and Russian.

Successful publication of these titles spanning half a century is a remarkable feat not without its own story of controversies, difficulties and intrigues.  Yet, this time continuum also showcases, apart from literary artistry, an array of illustrative artistic talent of painters and illustrators of modern fantasy art.

Big names and starting artists, were hired or commissioned by publishing houses that have acquired the rights to the Gorean novels. Among these were Robert Foster, Gino D'Achille, Richard Hescox, Ken W. Kelly, G. Wood,  Kelly Freas (pseudonym of Frank Kelly Freas), Boris Vallejo, Frank Frazetta, Atelier Frank and Zaugg, Jean-Pierre Stholl, Motoichiro Takebe,  Fred Gambino, any many more.

Publication challenges between 1988 to 2007, marked a period of silence in the history of the Gorean Saga novels.  Only but one novel was copyrighted in 2001 and printed in 2002, which was Witness of Gor.   Leo Winstead created the cover art for Witness of  Gor, his very first for the Gorean Chronicles, and he also became the last named artist credited for a cover in the series.

A resurgence of renewed interest,  as well as technological advances gave rise to the publishing of Books 27 to 35 between 2008 to 2019. Digital publishing entered the market, and technology changed how we produced, published, and read books.  Later book covers no longer credited a named artist but rather credited a group or department, such as e-reads Art, or Cirque Studios.
